In the summer of 2013, the Food and Drug Administration approved a new treatment for addiction to opioids. This new treatment is called Zubsolv and it is a combination of naloxone and buprenorphine.
This drug is similar to the existing drugs of Suboxone and Subutex. Like those medications, Zubsolv is used as a maintenance treatment plan for those people who have been addicted to opiods. Also similar to those drugs, its use should only be part of the plan for treatment. Psychosocial support and counseling should also be part of the treatment plan.
However, the difference between Zubsolv and the other medications currently on the market is that the people using it will not have to take as much of it to be effective as the old drugs. Anytime you can use a smaller amount of medication to get the same level of treatment, it is better for you.
Other treatments are also being considered by the FDA for the treatment of opioid addiction.
In May of 2013, the FDA reviewed a new implant that would treat opioid addiction, but that has not yet been approved. The FDA asked for more information for the implant before it made a decision.
The name of the implant is Probuphine and it is designed to be implanted into the body, underneath the arm. It only takes about 15 minutes to implant and can be done during a visit to the doctor’s office.
The implant is designed to work like buprenorphine, but it is a long-action version of it so you won’t have to continually take medication each day.
The questions from the FDA revolved around how the training of the doctors would be handled and whether there would be any effect to the wearer of the higher doses of Probuphine.
